FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My dog is aggressive to other dogs can I still join a class?

We believe that every dog should have the opportunity to be trained and if possible, in a group environment with several distractions. Its always important to understand why the dog is being aggressive.  Is the doing really being aggressive or just showing defensive behavior?  Detection Dogs USA analyzes the dogs behavior in a controlled situation.  Once we have a better understanding why the dog is showing aggression a training program is developed.

My last trainer only wanted to train with an E-collar. What do you think of this?

Detection dogs USA believes that the handler needs to use the right tools to help them effectively communicate with their K9 partners.  We strive to only use positive communication methods and tools to communicate with our dogs, however, when dogs are either not in the right frame of mind or are just too focused on the environment around them sometimes a stronger communication method is needed.  In all of our years of training we have never employed or recommended the use of an e-collar because we have never seen the need for one.  Since we are not trained in their proper use we do not employ them in our training program.  If properly used by a trainer or team that understands the appropriate time to use it, an e-collar can be a useful communication tool, but the large majority of people using or even training with e-collars are not proficient with when and how to appropriately use the device.

My dog is 4 years old, is it too late to train?

Old dogs can learn new tricks.  It all goes back to the relationship you build with them.  This relationship development can start at any age, so NO it’s not too late to train.
